Our inaugural report explores the multiple ways that unhoused people in Los Angeles were impacted by the January fires and demonstrates our research collective’s experiment with taking a mutual-aid approach to collective knowledge production about our communities. Weaving together public health and social science analysis with community-action methodologies, we document the failures of city and county agencies to address the health needs and safety of unhoused people during that crisis, as well as the creative and defiant care practices that housed and unhoused mutual aid volunteers took on to keep each other alive even while weathering various negative health impacts.
